In early 1959, Shanghai Mechanical Industry School was located at No. 152 Yanchang Road, Zhabei District, and was jointly led by the Municipal Economic Commission, the Municipal Overseas Chinese Federation, and the Municipal Education Bureau. In September, the school was officially opened and the first batch of new overseas Chinese students accounted for a quarter of the enrollment. The school was originally named the Shanghai Mechanical Manufacturing School, but it was later changed to its current name in 1960 because it avoided confusion with the Shanghai Mechanical Manufacturing School affiliated to the Central Ministry of Machinery Industry.

The school was forced to disband in June 1970, and the school was closed during the ten years of unrest between 1970 and 1983. After smashing the Gang of Four, the majority of returned overseas Chinese and relatives of overseas Chinese have demanded to implement the policy and restore the school. On March 21, 1983, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government approved and agreed to the Shanghai Mechanical Industry School. The school was jointly led by the Municipal Economic Commission, the Municipal Overseas Chinese Federation, and the Municipal Education Bureau. The Municipal Economic Commission designated the relevant bureau to run the school. It was located at 152 Yanchang Road, Zhabei District. Re-enrollment. During the school resumption, the school was first managed by the Municipal Overseas Chinese Federation. From September 21, the school's party-government relationship was entrusted to the Light Industry Bureau.

In December 1983, according to the opinion of the municipal government, a new Shanghai Mechanical Industry School was selected. In 1997 it was renamed "Chinese New Overseas Chinese Secondary Vocational School". In 2013, the original school name was restored to Shanghai Mechanical Industry School.
