How Do I Earn a Religion PhD?

On November 5, 2012, Order No. 11 of the State Administration of Religious Affairs promulgated the Measures for the Grant of Degrees in Religious Institutions (Trial). The "Measures" are divided into General Provisions, Conditions, Grants, Legal Responsibility, and Article 5 of Chapter 25, and will be implemented as of January 1, 2013.

The "Measures for the Award of Religious Institutions (Trial)" was adopted by the State Council for Religious Affairs Bureau on October 16, 2012, and is hereby promulgated. It will be implemented as of January 1, 2013. [1]

Article 1 These measures are formulated in order to strengthen the training of religious professionals and improve the level of education and teaching in religious colleges and universities, in accordance with relevant national laws and regulations, in accordance with the principle of separation between religion and education, and in combination with the actual situation of religious colleges.
Article 2 The term "religious institutions" as mentioned in these Measures refers to
Article 10 Undergraduate graduates from religious institutions who pass the bachelor's thesis review and meet the following conditions will be awarded a bachelor's degree:
(1) to have a good grasp of the basic theories and teachings of this religion;
(2) have the initial ability to engage in religious research work;
(3) Having the basic ability to engage in religious educational activities.
Article 11 Students of religious colleges and universities complete master's degree studies, pass master's degree course examinations and thesis defense, and meet the following conditions to be awarded master's degrees:
(1) Master the basic theory and doctrine of this religion systematically, and have deeper accomplishments in its research field;
(2) Having the ability to engage in religious research work;
(3) Have strong ability to engage in religious educational activities.
Article 12 Students of religious institutions have completed their Ph.D. studies, passed Ph.D. postgraduate examinations and dissertation defense, and meet the following conditions to be awarded doctoral degrees:
(1) A systematic and in-depth grasp of the basic theories and teachings of this religion, with outstanding results in its research fields;
(2) Having the ability to independently engage in religious research;
(3) Possess a systematic and solid ability to engage in religious affairs.
Article 13 To apply for a degree in a religious institution, you must also have a certain level of foreign language or ancient Chinese, and specific standards shall be formulated by various national religious groups. [2]
Article 14 Religious institutions that confer degrees shall have qualifications for conferring degrees.
Eligible higher religious institutions may apply for degree-granting qualifications in accordance with the procedures.
Article 15 To apply for a degree-granting qualification, a religious institution shall fill in an application form for granting a qualification for a religious institution and submit it to the religious group that hosts the institution. The religious group shall, after review, submit it to the working group for the degree of this religion. Religious colleges and universities organized by national religious groups apply for qualifications for degree awards, and the colleges report directly to the religious degree working group.
The religious college degree working group shall review the applications of religious colleges and universities according to the implementation rules of the religious religious college degree granting rules and the working rules of the degree working group, and propose the degree-granting institutions, disciplines that can award degrees and corresponding degrees. Opinions are submitted to the National Committee for Religious Group Education for review. The National Committee for Religious Group Education issues religious degree award certificates to religious institutions that have agreed to grant degree qualifications, and the national religious groups report to the State Bureau of Religious Affairs for the record.
Article 16 Religious colleges and universities that have obtained qualifications for degree awarding shall, based on the degrees that can be awarded, establish corresponding bachelor degree evaluation committees, master's degree thesis defense committees, and doctoral degree thesis defense committees.
The members of the bachelor's degree evaluation committee, the master's thesis defense committee, and the doctoral thesis defense committee of a religious institution are proposed by the religious institution. After being reviewed by the religious group that hosts the religious institution, they are submitted to the religious degree working group for review. Religious colleges and universities organized by national religious groups may directly report to the religious degree working group for approval.
After the names of the bachelor's degree evaluation committees, master's thesis defense committees, and doctoral thesis defense committees of religious institutions have been determined, the national religious organizations should report to the State Bureau of Religious Affairs for the record.
Article 17 The bachelor's degree assessment committee of a religious institution is responsible for assessing bachelor's degrees.
The master's degree thesis defense committee and doctoral degree thesis defense committee of religious institutions are responsible for reviewing master's and doctoral thesis respectively, organizing defenses, providing opinions on whether to grant a master's degree or a doctoral degree, and submitting them to the religious degree working group for review. After being approved by the religious group education committee, the national religious group shall report to the State Bureau of Religious Affairs for the record.
Article 18 Religious colleges and universities with qualifications for doctoral degree awards honorary doctorates from well-known persons at home and abroad. An honorary doctorate degree shall be nominated by a religious institution and reviewed by the working group of the degree of the religion, submitted to the National Committee of Religious Groups for Education, and submitted to the State Bureau of Religious Affairs for the record.
Article 19 The granting of degrees for overseas students studying in religious institutions shall be handled in accordance with the provisions of these Measures. [2]
Article 20 For religious institutions that have obtained qualifications for degree awards, the Working Group on Religious Degrees confirms that it cannot guarantee the academic level of the degree awarded. After it has been submitted to the National Committee for Religious Groups for Education, it may stop or revoke the corresponding degree in that institution. Qualifications are granted and reported by the national religious group to the State Bureau of Religious Affairs.
Article 21 If a degree that has been awarded is found to seriously violate the provisions of these Measures, it shall be revoked by the assessment committee that conferred its bachelor s degree or the national religious group education committee that conferred its master s and doctorate degrees.
Article 22 Members of the Bachelor's Degree Evaluation Committee, the Master's Degree Thesis Defense Committee, the Doctor's Degree Thesis Defense Committee members, and the Degree Working Group members who violate the degree awarding procedures and regulations shall be ordered by national religious groups according to the severity of the circumstances. Corrections, cancellations of committee or working group membership, and invalidation of degrees awarded in violation of regulations.
If a bachelor's degree evaluation committee, a master's thesis defense committee, a doctoral thesis defense committee, and a degree working group have violated the procedures and regulations for awarding degrees, the national religious group will order corrections, suspend the awarding of work, and reorganize according to the severity of the circumstances The committee or working group has declared invalid degrees awarded in violation of regulations. Article 23: Qualification certificates for degree awards in religious institutions are printed by national religious groups and issued by national religious committee education committees, and are valid within the religious community.
Religious college degree certificates are printed by various national religious groups and issued by religious colleges and are valid within the religious world.
Article 24 The measures for awarding academic titles in Tibetan Buddhist colleges are separately stipulated.
Article 25 These Measures shall be implemented as of January 1, 2013. [3]
