  The Nightingale Medal, established in 1912, is the highest honor award in the international nursing community. It is named after Florence Nightingale, the founder of nursing and the founder of modern nursing education.

  The Nightingale Medal was approved at the 9th International Red Cross Conference in Washington in 1912 to reward nurses, volunteer assistants, activists, and regular supporters of the Red Cross or Red Cross-affiliated health care units of the countries concerned. Recognize their exceptional dedication and courage in wartime or peacetime for the selfless service and accomplishments of injured, sick, disabled, or people whose health is threatened.

  The Nightingale Medal is silver plated. On the front is a portrait of Florence Nightingale and the words "in memory of Florence Nightingale, 1820-1910". The reverse circle is engraved with "True Essence of Humane Compassion", with the name of the medal holder and the date of award, engraved by a red and white ribbon that connects the medal with the red medal in the center.
