Born from Suetonius's Life of Augustus, this book is a classic work in this field after adding details to cover all aspects of Roman life and customs Its English translation was published in 10 editions from 1844 to 1891. A similar work, Charikles (1840) on the life of the ancient Greeks, was equally successful. His five-volume collection Handbook of Roman Antiquities (Handbuch der romischen Altertumer, 1843 ~ 1868) was completed by the classical scholars Theodor Mommsen and Joachim Marquardt.
