What does an optical laboratory technician do?
Optical laboratory technician is a trained employee responsible for creating glasses and other types of optical lenses. Most optical technicians are secondary school graduates and complete training at work in the laboratory, although some can look for further preparation and certification through a vocational university. Technicians are an important part of the practice of optometrist or ophthalmologist because they are a person responsible for taking over the patient's prescription and comparing the corrective lenses to the glasses. The completed glasses are then brought to the patient to final adjustment. In addition to creating lenses, technology is also responsible for maintenance of the optical laboratory and its equipment. In some cases, the production of the lens may be carried out in a separate laboratory with several techniques that fill the regulations and send them to one or more of the offices. Visiting the patient usually begins with an appointment with an ophthalmologist to determine the best remedial lenses for his vision problems. As soon as it has a prescription, the optical laboratory technician selects the appropriate lens and uses any shades or other special treatments that the patient needs. The optical laboratory technician also performs repairs for all types of lenses if they are scored or broken.
