This is a project established by the Singapore government in 1991 to specifically enroll Chinese students to study at Singapore's publicly funded schools. The Singapore government has successfully conducted 15 cooperations with the Chinese Ministry of Education in this project until 2006. And it is still continuing the enrollment of about 300 students each year. The Ministry of Education of Singapore (MOE for short) has cooperated with many domestic universities including: Harbin Institute of Technology, Jilin University, Dalian University of Technology, Nanjing University, Zhejiang University (the project was terminated due to student problems in 2007), Central South University, Chongqing University , Southeast University, South China University of Technology, Xiamen University, Shandong University, Xi'an Jiaotong University and other institutions of higher learning; and key provincial high schools such as: Liaoning Provincial Experiment, Liaoning Provincial Second Middle School, Harbin No. 3 Middle School, Tangshan No. 1 Middle School, and so on. Scholarship students have undergone rigorous interviews and written examinations, and the list of 300 scholarship students each year is finally released. They will go to the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University of Singapore for study and further studies. Both universities are among the top 100 universities in the world, and their Chinese universities ranked eighteenth in the Times s World University Rankings 2006. Of course, the purpose of the Singapore government to find scholarship students in China is also very clear, that is, to alleviate the shortage of talents in Singapore. In return, these scholarship students must work in Singapore after graduation.
As an island nation with a population of 4 million and a land area of 650 square kilometers, Singapore, which is severely lacking in various natural resources, has always understood the importance of talents for the overall development of a country. In order to attract foreign talents, at the same time promote Sino-Singapore relations, and better grasp the business opportunities in the rapid development of the Chinese market, the Singapore Ministry of Education began to launch a series of scholarship programs in China in the early 1990s, mainly divided into three categories , SM1, SM2, and SM3. SM is the abbreviation of Senior Middle School. The students enrolled in these three types of programs are junior juniors, seniors, and freshmen.
The students of SM1 come from a number of outstanding middle school graduates from specific key middle schools in various provinces and cities across the country. Currently, the provinces include three provinces in Northeast China, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Chongqing, Tianjin, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Jiangxi. Guangdong, Fujian, Anhui, Hainan, etc. (to be added). Since SM1 adopts the corresponding school system, the enrollment work is carried out independently by the province's and municipality's corresponding secondary school in Singapore. Schools in different provinces and cities may be classified in the same middle school, and the corresponding schools in different middle schools in the same city may not be the same.
The admission test for SM1 is usually conducted during the summer vacation, most of which are from the end of July to the beginning of August. The school's registration will be completed before the student graduates. Candidates who have obtained the qualification for the examination will participate in a written test and an interview, respectively, which will be divided into two days.
Written tests include English, math and orientation tests. Mathematics is definitely the easiest subject, because it is tested in Chinese, and the content of secondary school mathematics in Singapore is broad but not in-depth. The English test will be more difficult, and there is another composition, about 300 words. But English is not the most important criterion for admissions, as long as it is not particularly bad (generally, 80% to 90% of ordinary junior high school graduates will not pass their English exam unless the English is very good). Orientation test is a kind of IQ test, which completes a question to find regular maps within a specified time (some people say that it is like a figure judgment question in the Chinese civil servant exam). Singapore educators believe that this kind of IQ test can assess a student's logic and determine its future development space. If the tropism test fails, even if the other plays well, the hope of being accepted will be greatly reduced.
The interview procedure is set by the school principal and the teacher, so the admission interviews for each school are slightly different. For example, some schools may add essay recitations and pictures in the Singapore English test to interviews. But in general, this interview is not particularly formal. The two teachers (or principals) conducted more than one interview with a student in English (I heard that very few schools have Chinese interviews). It may be the reason that the candidates are still young. The teacher usually only asks simple questions about learning and interests based on the materials you provide, such as transcripts, award certificates, etc. Sometimes it also talks about family and ideals, basically like chatting. As long as you are not too nervous during the interview, you will not have too many problems if you are well-dressed and talkative.
Students admitted to SM1 will come to Singapore at the end of September and early October of that year (the specific date is set by the school), and then take a bridging course of about two months, that is, full-time English tuition, to adapt to full English teaching as soon as possible. Singapore's academic system starts on January 1st every year. At this time, freshmen of SM1 are transferred to S3 to study mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, sociology, English, Chinese, and Chinese literature. Graduated from Form 4 and took the GCE O Level Exam in Cambridge, England, and entered each junior college (Singapore high school) based on the test results. At present, there is another Integrated Program (that is, the through train program). These IP students do not need to take the O Level exam and directly enter the junior college under the through train program (there are only a few schools, depending on the province of the candidate Counterpart school in the city).
The junior college is also a two-year course and takes the GCE A Level Exam in Cambridge, UK, and applies to the university with the results of the exam. It is worth mentioning that the contract period of SM1 students and the Ministry of Education of Singapore is 4 years, that is, when SM1 students graduate from junior college, they can automatically cancel the contract and apply for universities in other countries. Commonwealth countries can apply with A level results. Most schools in the United States also recognize A-level results, but also require students to take the SAT themselves. If students want to stay in Singapore, they can continue to renew their contract. At this time, university scholarships usually have bonding, usually 3 to 6 years.
The living expenses of SM1 students are S $ 2,200 per year for the first two years, and S $ 2,400 per year for the first year of junior college. The dormitory does not provide lunch on weekdays, and students need to have lunch at school. During school and public holidays, meals are provided in the dormitory.
SM2 is targeted at Chinese high school science graduates. It is also enrolling in key high schools in various provinces and cities. The provinces with quotas are basically the same as SM1, but the schools are slightly different. Because SM2 students do not need to branch out after coming to Singapore, there is no counterpart.
The admission test for SM2 is similar to SM1, and it is divided into written test and interview. Written exams include English, Mathematics, Physics and Comprehensive. The order of the exams is usually fixed: Comprehensive, Physics, Mathematics, English. All exams are completed in one day. Unlike SM1, the written test for SM2 admissions is usually conducted two months before the interview, and some candidates will be wiped out before the interview based on the written test results. (Please refer to the entire application process downstairs for the examination content).
Admitted SM2 students will enter Singapore in early December of that year. In the early days of Singapore, there will also be a triage test. Students who pass the exam with a good foundation in English need only eight months of training and can enter university in August next year, while most people need 20 months of training. One year admission. The first three to four months are generally English and computer training, and then around March, all SM2 students will be randomly assigned to each junior college to experience life for one semester and end at the end of May. After that, the short-term students will soon be preparing for university affairs, and the remaining students will continue to study math, physics and chemistry, and choose the majors studied in the university according to the test results. (Since 2007, the time for SM2 students to experience life in junior college has been reduced to two weeks).
The living expenses of SM2 students are S $ 6,000 per year, which also does not include tuition, accommodation and meals. SM2 students have to serve Singapore for six years after graduating from university, that is, to work in a registered company in Singapore and not necessarily work in Singapore. There are many SM2 students who want to go abroad to study or study after graduation, but they have no choice but to meet the restrictions. Cancellation of the contract before the expiry of the contract, the student's family must compensate the scholarship provider, the maximum is about 150w yuan, and the amount of compensation decreases with the remaining time limit of the contract.
SM3 enrolls freshmen (mostly science students) from some famous universities in China. These universities include: Beihang University, Beili University, Sichuan University, Chongqing University, Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xiamen University, Wuhan University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Dalian University of Technology, South China University of Technology, Shandong University, Jilin University, and Nanjing University (roughly As such, further investigation is needed). After entering these universities for one or two months, the university will open registration for students according to the situation of the students: including the total scores of the college entrance examination, English single scores, the source of the candidates, and which department they are in, and I heard that some schools still accept applications. fee.
The SM3 admissions test is also divided into a written test and an interview. Written test for mathematics, English, comprehensive quality test. There are some differences between mathematics and high school. Analytical geometry and solid geometry are not considered, but plane geometry and series are the focus. In general, the problem is not difficult. There are no multiple choice questions in English. Reading comprehension is to write your own answers. There are many subjective questions (this is actually the type of English test in the life of a secondary school in Singapore). The composition is to write a 400-word article from any of the 4 topics. It's not too difficult to listen to the friends who have taken the test. There is enough time, and it is no problem to take the test seriously.
Finally, the comprehensive ability test, or the same IQ test, the same question type.
The written test results are only for reference, as long as it is not too bad. Of course, if your written test score is first place, it is also quite advantageous.
The interviewers were interviewed by officials from the Singapore Ministry of Education and professors from NUS (National University) and NTU (Nanyang Technological University). Use only English during the interview. However, as long as the Chinese examiners speak Chinese, sometimes they will ask you to speak Chinese when they see that you have difficulty speaking in English. However, if you can speak in English, you must try your best to speak in English.
The newly admitted SM3 students are new here in early December of that year. After that, we will conduct language training for half a year. Admission in August of the following year. There will be an English test soon after enrollment, and continue to study English in groups based on the test results. SM3's professional choices in universities are also linked to the college entrance examination scores. Naturally, high scores have advantages. It is said that the scores of the college entrance examinations guaranteed by students are counted as full marks.
Similar to SM2, the annual living cost of SM3 students is S $ 6,000. The contract and compensation issues are basically the same as SM2.
Generally speaking, SM1 students are the youngest and face the greatest pressure on study (because of taking two major national exams), and entering the university two years later than domestic students of the same class (SM2 and SM3 are only late One year). But the SM1 plan is arguably the most flexible and has the shortest contract time.
The SM2 and SM3 plans are similar, except that SM2 students do not have to take the college entrance examination in China or take the A Level examination in Singapore. It's just that the pre-school training is slightly longer.
Combining the enrollment of these three scholarship programs, we can see that this test for IQ seems very important. Therefore, students and friends who intend to apply for such programs should not ignore this test while preparing English.
