Some people immediately get jobs in this units of the hospital after completing the RN training. Many hospitals require more. They could offer an internship for training in critical care, which could take several years, or are looking for nurses that have been working for surgical or medical departments for several years. Employment requirements could exceed these and the only way to hire some hospitals if they are certified as critical care, or if they have a Master's Degree that specializes in critical care. Some nursing schoolshave this advanced grade.

The type of employment and the area of specialization can determine some obligations of these RNs. For example, the ICU nurse working in the neonatal unit can do everything from changes in diapers to wound care, cleaning and dressing.

ICU sisters must be extremely alert. They evaluate and record the monitor values and make sure they communicate the main changes to doctors. They also regularly evaluate patients to determine whether elements such as pain control are and look for any signs that indicate deterioration. Unlike other areas of the hospital, the severity of the patient's condition allows less direct nurses/communication of patients, which means that the nurses are extremely important in determining the POREB patient.

In addition to this vigilance, the sister of ICU often communicates with the family. They can update the family about developing by explaining monitors, tubes and wires that are on the patient or can educate them in the protocol in solving or dealing with the current condition of the patient.
