What is Audio Forensic?

Audio Forensics is simply the use of scientific investigation, technology and tools to determine the authenticity of sound for civil or criminal cases. The results of the sound forensic substances can be used as evidence in various legal cases that deal with anything from divorce to industrial espionage. Also, it is not unusual to see the sound forensic analysis applied to tracking tapes used in cases against employers or employees of a particular business.

Audio Forensics has a long history with the military and government of the United States. In World War II, technology was used to identify the voices of targeted enemies that sounded above the radio and phones. The use of a sound spectrograph, which depicted the frequencies and amplitude of voice patterns, helped analyzers identify people who are interesting. In recent years, audio forensic has been used to analyze the messages created by terrorists to help determine their location, the time of sound creation and other original factors.

Which matter that is commonly evaluated in a sound clip to determine its authenticity are background sounds, voice frequency changes, sounds based on recording equipment and stopping, starting and suspending signatures. Any discontinuity in these areas may signal the analyzer that the record is unauthorized or has been threatened. Sometimes these discontinuities can be masked for background sounds and further work should be done to detect them.

One of the most popular techniques used during the analysis is a comparison of one unknown sound with a friend for its identification. This can be done in cases involving voices where one speaker was identified, but not the other. To identify the speakers, voices, priority, vowel trajectory, formant trajectories, stripes, brass patterns, nasal resonance, speech pathology and more can be identified. Forensic sound analysis also emphasizes the use of signatures. Many sound forensic analysts rely on sound signatures that come from specific controlled sources. An example of this is when the audio analyzer uses frequency from electricity sources. For these types of analyzers, the electrical outlet can provide all answers to their questions of sound forensic questions.

While there are many digital tools and programs that have a forensic analyzer at their disposal, the work associated with the evaluation of a piece of sound remains high. The analyzers can find themselves listening to a single piece of sound a hundred times. Discontinuit detection can be difficult, but it is not impossible for a trained and reserved forensic sound analyzer.
