What is Ged®?

GED® is an abbreviation for the development of general education and is a battery of five tests that, when passed, stands as an equivalent diploma in high school. It is often referred to as a diploma of general education or in general education, as in the sentence: "I got my GED." This is inaccurate. Ged® is not only testing, but a program that offers teaching and preparation for those who have not completed high school.

The GED® program was first launched for military members who did not receive a high school diploma after World War II, causing it to be more difficult to find a job. The US Education Council (ACE) began offering tests and education to civilians in 1947, and now most people who pass GED® test are civilians. Preparation for GED® is usually performed through adult education classes that are freely offered. There are some private programs that offer GED® Prep, but passing classes before the test is usually not a prerequisite.
