What is a Dividend Payout?

The dividend payment rate, also known as the dividend distribution rate and the Cash Flow Measurement Formula, is the percentage of dividends distributed to shareholders as a percentage of the company's profits. This is the opposite of the Retention Ratio. The dividend payout ratio indicator reflects how much common stockholders get from the total net earnings per share. As far as individual common stock investors are concerned, this index reflects current interests more directly than net earnings per share.
