What are some rare blood types?

Within the ABO/Rhesus group systems, which are used to classify most types of blood, there are several rare blood types. The most precious is AB-, and less than one percent of the world's population has this blood type. B- and O- are also very rare, each representing less than 5% of the world's population. In addition to these basic two, however, there are more than 30 recognized blood writing systems, creating a number of rare blood types, some of which only appear in a handful of people.

The blood type is determined by the presence of certain antigens in the blood. Antigens A and B are very common, which makes it easier to classify people with antigen, while people with blood type O do not have antigen. The blood type is inherited and many rare types of blood are found in specific communities and ethnic groups. For example, African -Americans are more at risk of being negative.
