What is Mammotome®?
Mammotome® uses MRI, ultrasound or X -ray technique along with vacuum equipment to perform breast biopsy. The procedure removes a slight sample of healthy tissue and the cut is so small, about 0.25 inches (0.635 cm), no stitches are required. Mammotome® is usually considered an outpatient procedure and requires only a local anesthetic.
The planted device used for Mammotome® uses a computer system to insulate the accurate placement of the breast on the mammogram. Unlike the previous biopsy of the Common Core needle, which has used several needles to collect samples, the Mamotome® space is inserted only once. Its accuracy is also better than the need for a needle. Biopsy takes less than an hour and patients are able to immediately restore daily work or recreational activities. The analysis of the results is usually completed before the patient leaves the clinic or doctor's office. This system can also be successfully used to detect non -law's lumps, called fibroadnomas.
mammotOME® is a simple and relatively fast office progress. The doctor first sterilizes the skin on the chest and then the anesthetic area of concern to the local anesthetic injection comparable to the type used. The device provides an accurate direction to the area of abnormality, so only one probe is needed.
As soon as the probe is in place, the tissue sample is extracted into the device sample. Then the sample is delivered to the surgeon or radiologist for analysis. The sample usually consists of eight to ten samples of tissues collected from 360 ° around the cut.
Mammotome® Procedure usually, although not always, provides a reliable diagnosis of breast matter. Most patients also stated that in addition to the rapid procedure, this technique was also much less traumatic emotionally and physically than the bio -core biopsy. Another plus is that cancer that is originally discovered with mammotome® biopsy requires only one surgery for treatment instead of two.
Several different companies produce vacuum assisted breast biopsy systems. Mammotome® is just one brand created by Johnson & Johnson. Tyco also makes one known as minimally invasive breast biopsy (Mibb ™). Recently, there has been a hand version, also known as a hand vacuum biopsy (HHVB), allowing access to this procedure more widespread.
