What Is Macroglossia?

The giant-eyed jellyfish is covered with small round scales and the tail handle is weakly scaled; the scales are rough. The lateral line hole scales are obvious, the front half is parallel to the dorsal edge, the arc is curved, and the back half is straight.

Chinese program name:
This species is oval (side view). Eyes are significantly larger, eye diameter can reach 1/2 of body height. The mouth is medium and large, the cleft is nearly vertical, and the maxilla is retractable. Both jaw teeth are degenerate and tiny; the sacrum is toothless. The anterior branchial epiphysis has large spines backward. The ventral fins begin behind the base of the pectoral fin. The dorsal and anal fins have spinous plates, but there is no spine between the ventral and anal fins. Pectoral fins are small. Body covered with small round scales. One side line, curved on the back of the trunk. The body is purplish brown, and the tail fins are reddish. Dorsal fin spines are black on top and the other fins are colorless. Warm water bottom fish. The habitat water depth is 200380m. Distributed in the South China Sea, Japan's Kumano area, Tosa Bay area, and the western Pacific warm waters. Body length about 65cm [1]
Dorsal fins VI ~ -27 ~ 29; anal fins I, 25-27; pectoral fins 16; ventral fins I-6; caudal fins 3 + 1 + 11 + 1 + 3. The lateral line scale is about 72 ~ 75. Gill rake 17. Body length is 2.4 to 2.5 times the height, 2.8 to 2.9 times the head length, 4 to 5 times the kiss length, 2.2 to 2.6 times the maxillary length, 1.9 to 2.2 times the eye diameter, and 2.8 to 3.1 times the eye interval . The length of the tailstock is 1.3 to 1.4 times the height of the tailstock. The body is flat, long oval, and the tail is short. The isthmus to the anus ventral surface is flat and diamond-shaped. The head is large, with a well-developed mucus cavity, and the head is jagged. Short kiss. The eyes are large and lateral, located in the middle of the head, and there are 3 rows of jagged edges on the inside of the upper edge of the eye. Eyes are wide, deeply concave, and horseshoe-shaped. There are 2 nostrils, located above the eyes. Mouth large, upper position, vertical cleft, lower jaw protruding in front of upper jaw. The maxilla can retract, the posterior protrusion of the anterior jaw extends into the deep depression of the eye interval, and there is a depression in the middle of the maxilla. Lips are smooth, wide and thin. The jaw teeth are extremely small, with 1 to 2 rows irregularly arranged. The posterior margin of the anterior gill cover is straight, and the corners protrude backward. The gill holes are large and the gill cover membrane is not connected to the isthmus. There are fake gills. The first gill arch has a well-developed gill rake, slender, with small spines on the inside, and 3 to 4 tumor-like processes in front of the lower branch. Gill cover strips 7.
There is a row of spine-shaped bone plates from the fourth dorsal fin to the back of the penta-fin spine and the sides of the anal fin base. There are 1 dorsal fins with deep notches on the spine and fin strips; the spines are more developed with grooves on the surface, the second spine is the most powerful, and the leading edge is strongly serrated. The anal fin and the dorsal fin are in the same shape, with a free spine in front, which is thick and short. Pectoral fins are small and low. Dorsal, anal and pectoral fins are unbranched. The starting point of the ventral fin is opposite to the starting point of the dorsal fin. The ventral spine is strong and slightly longer than the second spine of the dorsal fin. The leading edge is strongly serrated. The trailing edge of the caudal fin is truncated, and the forelegs of the caudal fin are weakly spiny. When living, the body is turquoise, the tail fins are reddish, and the edges are light brown. Dorsal fin spines are black with light fins [2] .
