What is osteolysis?

osteolysis is a state in which the immune system triggers an attempt to reabsorb bones into the body. A condition associated with a number of bone and joint disorders may also occur when artificial joints are implanted. There are several different types of this condition, including distal clavicular osteolysis.

The process begins when the body feels some type of material that is considered a threat. The immune system triggers the release of osteoclasts to insulate and slowly absorb the material back into the body, where it can be converted into materials that do not provide any threat. Unfortunately, osteolysis may also begin to worsen healthy bone tissue when the immune system incorrectly identifies the nature of the so -called foreign material.

The most common examples of osteolysis are related to the use of artificial joints and implants such as overall shoulders, artificial hips and artificial knee joints. It is not unusual for small fragments of natural bone as well as small fragments of plastic or metal used in the implant, to wear HLAof the bone or implant parts. When this happens, the immune system seeks to clean the area by absorbing these vicious fragments of particles from the area.

While this condition usually does not create much in the way of symptoms, the results of the state may be serious. Over time, the implant can slip out of the settlement, making it impossible to properly perform the artificial joint. At the same time, this shift can put further pressure on the remaining bone in the area, maybe lead to a fracture or a complete break. In both of these events, the chances of some kind of damage to the surrounding tissue open the possibility of infection and inflammation that can be quite painful.

Osteolysis, however, can also occur when there are no artificial joints present. Distal osteolysis, also known as clavicular or distal clavicular osteolysis, is a problem that people who lift heavy weights sometimes experience. The final result is to trigger the immune system to clean the stray bone particles that could lead to another erosion of the bone. Over time, it is a weaker collarbone, thus affecting the ability of the shoulders to function properly during weightlifting.

Due to the nature of osteolysis, it is sometimes necessary to undergo what is called revision surgery. This type of surgery is used to replace the artificial joint with a new unit, as much as possible to repair damage and perhaps allow individuals to enjoy and fair quality of life. However, it is important to realize that not anyone who receives a shoulder, knee or hip will experience osteolysis. Regular checks will help identify the problem in time and allow it to take steps before serious damage.
