- Gingival index (GI) This index only observes the condition of the gums, checks for changes in gum color and texture, and bleeding tendency.
- The examination uses a blunt-ended periodontal probe, combined with inspection and exploration. Examine the entire mouth or a few selected teeth. The gums around each tooth must be examined, and the surrounding gums are divided into the mesial (cheek) papilla, the median lip (cheek) margin, the distal lip (cheek) nipple, and the lingual gingival margin. The score of each tooth is the average of 4 dental scores. No one scores the average of all the tested teeth.
- 0 = Gum health
- 1 = Slight inflammation of the gums: slight changes in gum color and mild edema, no bleeding during exploration
- 2 = moderate inflammation of the gums: red gums, bright edema, and bleeding on probe
- 3 = Severe inflammation of the gums: The gums are obviously swollen or ulcerated, and there is a tendency to bleed automatically
