What is Catalyst® switch?

The

Catalyst® switch is part of a line of network or Ethernet switches produced by Cisco Systems. When Cisco got different companies, she re -identified her switches as part of her Switch Catalyst® report. In the history of the model, Cisco included a number of improvements and features.

The term Ethernet switch can be misleading to those who are not familiar with network technology. Most of them were thinking about the switch as something that triggers or stops the device. The Ethernet switch not only connects and disconnects computers or other components in the network, but can also check and redirect information based on the content, source or rules set by the network administrator.

The network switch performs the same function, but at the local level. The network switch usually processes the operation that comes and ends in the same office or organization. Like the Ethernet switch, it is more intelligent than just a hub and can check, process and redirect data traffic.

Catalyst® offers different capabilities depending on the user's requirements. Cisco has used different operating systems to allow data to switch in any number of environments. The Catalyst® switch can act as a hub, switch, net switch or Ethernet switch. This allows better energy efficiency and bandwidth management, allowing higher data capacity.

The switch configuration is usually done using a graphical user interface or even if there is a simple text template that is available via Cisco. It is possible to configure the switch using the HTTP server, but this is less common due to security problems. Copying the configuration to the switch from another server is possible, but this is also less likely for the same reason.

Another element of Catalyst® switching line is modularity. Switches are offeredY WiProcessor, power supply and other components installed on separate cards. This allows the user to repair, upgrade or reconfigure the switch without replacing the entire switch. With redundancy it is possible to repair or replace components without switching offline. This saves the work involved in a review of the replaced switch.

In some cases, CISCO switches act as a switch router, extending the role and flexibility of the device and offering the use of different protocols in the switch operations. This range of computer switch also has the possibility to provide T1, E1 interfaces and various wide networks (WANS). Some Catalyst® models can offer Ethernet power supply (POE) where the power supply is transmitted via the same cabling as data. It is primarily used to power cameras and user interface devices.
