What Is a Non-Breaking Space?

Non-functional space is not a building auxiliary function space, not an intermediary space, but includes space categories such as transportation space, connection space, stairs, atrium, gray space, which have no special function, or categories other than the main functional space of the building. The artistic quality of architectural works often does not come from the play of the main functional space, but often from the space that does not have a special function in the building to do more exploration and creation.

Non-functional space

Right!
Non-functional space is not a building auxiliary function space, not an intermediary space, but includes, for example, transportation space, connection space, stairs, atrium,
1 Functional space is deterministic
When a space functions as an office, we have to give it a suitable scale,
Architect Zhang Yingpeng's works such as Suzhou Gaobo Software Technology College and Wuxi Nanyang College can better reflect the design ideas of non-functional spaces. The following sections select some typical design and processing methods for analysis.

3.1 Non-functional space 3.1 stairs

The teaching building of Suzhou Gaobo Software Technology College, the two main buildings are relatively close to each other, and the first floor is connected to the first floor with a roof, as shown in the space diagram in Figure 1. In Figure 2 is a five-story teaching building, the internal fire evacuation stairs have been met (there are double-run staircases at both ends of the building), the most obvious here is a long straight directly from the second-floor roof to the fifth floor. The staircase, which "hangs" outside the corridor, also hangs on the building facade. It can also feel like half-lying in the small space between the two teaching buildings. People can easily feel the existence of this staircase in this teaching space and become a special space highlight. It eliminates the boredom of the corridor space, enhances the sense of connection between the upper and lower floors, improves the efficiency of direct interpersonal communication, and provides people with convenient and happy use tools. After class, it is easier to become a place for games and a great place for taking pictures. This is the original intention of the designer. After a transportation space has the guiding function, it can also focus on creating entertainment and recreational space themes, and the chic feeling is naturally imprinted in the mind. The design of the stairway is quite similar to Kazuyo Sejima, who won the Pritzker Architecture Award in 2010. In 1996, she designed the outdoor staircase of the "Sister Island House" in Gifu, Japan. In the field, it also breaks through the use level and gives the staircase this non-functional space the theme of extra meaning.

3.2 Non-functional space 3.2 corridor

The corridor of the teaching building of Nanyang College in Wuxi is very wide and its design is special. Corridors are not just simple corridors, they increase the processing weight of the corridor space. It can be seen that it is only to strengthen the processing of non-functional spaces to achieve the design goals and to create a spatial theme with additional meaning. There is no special approach to functional spaces such as classrooms. This is the original intention of non-functional space design. The corridor can be divided into three levels. The first floor is a white wall, followed by a widened platform (at the height of the second-floor slab). There is also a special staircase to this platform. There is actually more than one on the platform. Meaningful space, using it as the node of the corridor, combined with the large corridor; the aisle is no longer crowded in the traditional sense and only has the function of connecting rooms. The aisle is no longer just a rush of people, but a story can happen everywhere. Places to talk, learn, show, meet, and even wait. The second floor is a paradoxical column. The incompleteness of the colonnade breaks the sense of seriousness. The campus building is elegant and continuous, and the intermittent colonnade is in the shadow of the light that passes through the cornice and the shadow that does not pass through the cornice. haunt. The elongated round white columns add a sense of dynamic and purity to the second-floor corridor space. The third floor is the corridor itself, which is hidden by partial walls and colonnades. The faint and subtle movement of people is neither as closed as the inner aisle nor as open as the general outer aisle. Between the senses, realize a kind of graceful space. The cornice is also an important shelter to form the corridor space. It is designed to be far-reaching. One is to widen and shade the corridor space, and the other is to create a thick shadow that eliminates the sense of volume and weight of the building and strengthens the light and shadow of the building. Variation effect, like a phantom space. The themes achieved by the corridor's treatment can be summed up as ambiguity, communicative, restful and artistic space.

3.3 Non-functional space 3.3 gray space

Modern architectural design
Administrative entrance of Suzhou Gaobo Library
Increasingly, the use of gray space is used to create a transition in space, enrich the layers of space, and create a space atmosphere. Gray space is a space without specific functions, and it is a large part of the category of non-functional space. The design and meaning of gray space is consistent with the idea of non-functional space design. Figure 4 is an entrance to the library building of Suzhou Gaobo Software Technology Institute. A long, single-run staircase is sheltered by a three-storey huge structure, which leads directly to the entrance on the third floor. In the face of a simple building entrance, instead of adopting a rigid treatment, a transition space was built, which is full of natural atmosphere and suitable for psychological feeling. The long stairs leading to the height also added gray space to the entrance. Happy atmosphere.

3.4 Non-functional space 3.4 Building external space

The connection between the entrance of the student dormitory and the dormitory building of Suzhou Gaobo Software Technology Institute (Figure 6) is located at the entrance.
Figure 6. The connection between the student dormitory building of Suzhou Gaobo Software Institute
A frame is counted out of the frame, and four similar large-scale door frames appear in the subsequent space sequence of entering the dormitory area. Each door frame connects the left and right dormitory buildings, and a straight staircase is set up on the side of the next three entrance frames to the second floor. This is a purpose-designed non-functional space with far-reaching intentions. This virtual space is defined by the buildings on both sides but is integrated into one body, which obviously highlights a kind of spatial guidance and gives the dormitory area a profound sense. The four-in rectangular door frame organizes the main building of the dormitory area and makes them have a relationship. Not only that, it also creates a welcoming atmosphere in the space between the buildings, attracting the students of the college to enter and exit this interesting place with a "travel" behavior. Getting in and out of the dormitory over and over again became a fun and natural act. Classmates who come and go every day will not escape this field of virtual space, and communication will always be inadvertent. At the same time, it is a space that promotes the communication and gathering of student groups. The rectangular frame and the side of the staircase are more likely to attract crowds than other places. The door frames and stairs of non-functional spaces are more like a background for crowd gathering. Set off a vivid picture of activist interaction.
