What is a portable media center?
The
portable media center was a device that first introduced Microsoft in 2003 and released a number of different hardware manufacturers in 2004. This device was intended as a competitor to the popular Apple ™ iPod ™ and it was the only format to connect multiple computer systems and devices for audio and video playback. While Microsoft ™ introduced the basic concept, it designed basic software for such devices and required the basic minimum of hardware for manufacturers, real devices were created by other companies. Media Center portable devices were eventually eliminated in favor of the second access in portable media players: Microsoft ™ Zune ™.

This device was usually somewhat smaller in nature and was designed to capture more aesthetic and functional attraction of the iPod ™. Zune ™ was also intended as a more separate device, and although it could connect to other Microsoft ™ systems, it was not designed to be part of the greater integration in the way the portable media devices were.
