What is the Foo camp?
The foo in the term Foo Camp is an abbreviation for Friends O'Reilly and is the head of O'Reilly Media Tim O'Reilly and his vice president Sara Winge. O'Reilly Media humbly began as a technical typewriter at the age of 70 and has now turned into an industrial giant, publishes books and websites on a number of topics related to computers. The idea of the camp has occurred after the bust of Dot Com and it is only an invitation that took place only for the best hackers (computer experts) in the country.
What makes the FOO camp interesting except the state of invitation is that there is no specific agenda until the participants arrive. Invited must then create a plan on Friday evening about what lectures, demonstrations and/or forums/discussions are taking place. For O'Reilly Media, it is part of the goal to combine some of the best minds in the computer and internet industry to solve problems (such as attempting to reduce spam mail). Since 2003, when the first FOO camp took place, other experts in the field organized similar camps andSome employees of O'Reilly Media launched FOO camps outside the US. In 2007, New Zealand Nathan Torkington organized the first Kiwi Foo camp in New Zealand.
In addition to managing people with large technical skills to solve computer problems and computer internet problems, it focuses on creating relationships between hackers that will lead to innovative programming and technology. Foo Camp also helps O'Reilly Media to stay step away from all the "buzz" of new ideas or urgent technologies. This helps the company to create technologies of forward websites and publications.
Initially O'Reilly Media created a list of guests, but now guests are advised to nominate others to participate in future FOO camps. The "non -unconference" nature of the Foo camp aims to mix people to think outside the box and think of their feet. Guests must be prepared to presentt, demonstrate and discuss your thoughts and cooperate with others in the camp to strengthen or change these ideas or put them in action.
The aim is "cross pollination" means different hackers who work for many different companies. Instead of focusing on profit by offering only a few people, the camp focuses on the idea of creating better technologies, regardless of the individual profits of society, to serve everyone who uses different technologies. About 200 people visit each annual “camp”. Although equipment is available as a bathroom, tents and food and drinks, the camp will not work unless participants are willing to cooperate on the development of the program.
Some other people in the field feel that FOO is too exclusive and developed an opponent into the camp. Socialtext hosted its first bar camp in 2005. The main difference, although still accepting the style of non -conformity, Anyone can join and participateaction. This is different from the FOO camp, which remains only an invitation.
