What is a balanced line?

The balanced line indicates a transfer line used in telecommunications and sound. This is also called a balanced pair of signals. Usually, balanced lines have three wires. These conductors consist of two signal conductors and ground wires.

In balanced parts, two signal wires carry the same signal. But they have the opposite polarity. These two wires also have the same impedance at each end.

The balanced line connection reduces noise and interference and is used in long cable transmission lines. Top sound devices, as well as some compact disc and amplifier players, use balanced lines with connections using three XLR connectors. Balanced lines can also be found in ethernet cables and telephone wires. First, two unbalanced telegraph lines were used. However, this was insufficient because the telephone wires often ran next to the electric wiring.
