What Is a Gun Drill?

Gun drill is a deep hole machining tool for chip removal. The v-shaped angle is 120 °.

1. It is a special deep hole machining tool for chip removal. The v-shaped angle is 120 °.
2. Used for gun drill special machine tools. 3. The cooling and chip removal method is a high-pressure oil cooling system. 4. There are two types of ordinary carbide and coated cutter heads.
Deep hole drill:
Gun drill is an effective deep-hole processing tool with a wide range of processing, from mold steel, glass fiber, Teflon and other plastics to high-strength alloys such as P20 and Inconel. In deep hole processing with strict tolerances and surface roughness requirements, gun drilling can ensure the dimensional accuracy, position accuracy and straightness of the hole.
In order to achieve satisfactory results when gun drilling deep holes, you must be proficient in the performance of the gun drilling system (including tools, machine tools, fixtures, accessories, workpieces, control units, coolant and operating procedures). The skill level of the operator is also important. According to the structure of the workpiece and the hardness of the workpiece material and the working conditions and quality requirements of the deep-hole processing machine, the appropriate cutting speed, feed amount, tool geometry parameters, carbide grades and coolant parameters can be selected to obtain excellent processing performance .
In production, straight groove gun drills are used the most. According to the diameter of the gun drill and the internal cooling holes of the transmission part, the shank and the cutter head, the gun drill can be made into two types: integrated and welded. Its coolant is sprayed from a small hole on the flank. Gun drills can have one or two circular cooling holes or a single waist hole
The standard gun drill can process holes with a diameter of 1.5mm to 76.2mm, and the drilling depth can reach 100 times the diameter. Special custom-made gun drills can process holes of
152.4mm deep holes with a depth of 5080mm. Although the feed per revolution of the gun drill is low, the feed per minute is greater than the twist drill (the feed per minute is equal to the feed per revolution multiplied by the tool or workpiece speed).
Because the cutter head is made of hard alloy, the cutting speed of gun drill is much higher than that of high-speed steel. This increases the feed rate of the gun drill per minute. In addition, when high-pressure coolant is used, the chips can be effectively discharged from the hole being processed, and there is no need to periodically retract the tool during the drilling process to discharge the chips.
The gun drills used by special machines can be produced at least one after all the products are ordered, and the quantity is not limited. The delivery time is only one month.
