What is a hollow chisel?

The hollow chisel is a tool for processing wood for cutting holes with one square wood or, if used in a overlapping pattern, rectangular motifs. The tool consists of a hollow square chisel with a rotating drill in the center. The tool is used in a dedicated Mortriser machine or in a standard drilling press with a special adapter. The force down to the tool causes the chisel to cut the square shape, while the rotating drill bit cleans all material from four sides of the cut through the port in the seminar body. Hollow chisels are available in a wide selection of individual sizes or in sets. On the other hand, square holes require special tools and techniques. Square holes or slots in wood are commonly known as mortar and are used extensively for ignition of curtains and locks and in the construction of motizer and element joints. These mortars can be cut with a conventional hand chisel or the tools known as a hollow chisel. Hollow chisel is basically a combined bit of tool used in mOrtiser machine or, when paired with an adapter, in a regular drill press.

The

hollow chisel consists of a steel tube of a square cross -section that has a setting edge in its work end representing the chisel component. In the center of the hollow chisel there is a flat -lined rotary drill bit with its cut edge located slightly back from the chisel. During the cutting operations, the body of the square of the chisel is clamped in a static position, while the drill rotates in it. The force down to the tool causes the sharp chisel to cut the square hole, while the bit of the bit cleans all the inner material from the cut. This waste material is transmitted by the drill shaft with its flutes and is released from the tool by ports to one side of the body of the chisel.

This tool can be used to cut a single square holes or used in a overlapping pattern for longer or wider slots. The hollow chisel is made of hardened tool steel, that keeps the sharp edge well. It is available in large selection of sizes either as a single item or as sets consisting of several consecutive or common sizes. The top edge on the hollow chisel is extremely sharp and care should be taken to prevent accidental contact with the edge when handling or storage.
