What is the AWL scratch?

Scratch AWL is a tool used to make brands on fixed objects. These AWLs are usually used to indicate a line on the surface of wood or metal to mark the location for later work. The Scratch AWL is a very simple tool, basically a metal tip with a handle at one end. These tools have a similar look as sewing AWL or Bradawl, but have a slightly different design.

The proposal of the normal AWL scratches has not changed in a very long time. The working part is a metal tip that is sharpened to a fine point. This increase is usually made of hardened steel, so it will maintain a better point. When the point begins to dull, it can be focused on a metal file. On the contrary, opposite the point is a handle, often made of wood. This handle is usually in the shape of a ball, so the user can contain a tool in a wide range of orientation. These brands often show where the applications become later, such as the production of a screw or cut opening. Since the brand is likely to be during a work proceSU is likely to distort, the brands made by AWL scratches are often very rough.

On a material without grain, like most metals, the AWL scratch is the preferred method of marking areas. On the grain materials, they are used only for the production of small brands or lines that go along grain. When it comes to grain, most workers use a brand knife. This knife similar to the chisel will easily reduce the surface fibers that would disrupt the AWL path. On the other hand, when he goes with grain, the knife often catches in cereal valleys that AWL easily avoids.

While all AWL types are very similar, there are small variants that distinguish one type from another. For example, Bradawl looks almost exactly like AWL scratching except for a small variation point of the tool. Bradawl's tip is slightly flattened to allow it to bite it into the wood, and then create a small wondering using a twisted movement to be used as a wgraft opening. The AWL sews have a modified tip that allows it to easily pierce the canvas or skin while pushing the thread.
