What is typography?
dingbat is a typographic ornament or symbol such as an arrow or a directional finger. Dingbats have a long and famous history in typography, despite their somewhat funny name. Many type foundries continue to produce dingats for people who work with letterpress, and Dingbats are also available in the form of digital fonts for people working on computers. Many computers come with several Dingbat fonts installed and more can be obtained. The printer ornaments served several functions. In the first sense, they broke the printed material in the design, making it easier to read and aesthetically pleasing. Of course, they were also simply ornamental, as the name suggests, and they also occupied the white space that could look embarrassing in the finished piece.
decorations of classic decorative scroll printers, bands and lines. Most people use "dingbat" to refer to only a single different symbol, rather than decorative engravings that once decorated the edges of many printed pages. Dingbats are also known as typographFull ornaments or simply ornaments.
Dingbat styles can have a number of forms. Some use floral motifs, in which case they are commonly known as fleurons. Others may be more geometic or can mimic animals or natural features. Dingbats can also serve a symbolic function, as it could be on the positioned finger to highlight the line of text, and mathematicians can use Dingbats for unique mathematical symbols.
Historically, printers maintained their ornaments in cases of separate types, although some fonts arrived in stock with several ornaments that would be stored with them. The ornaments were divided by size so that the printer could quickly find, for example, 14 points Dingbat, which fits into 14 point text. They could also be designed and carved to order and carved into wood or stamped in a lead, traditional material used to create a movingtype. The flourishing of these printers could turn an ordinary documentary into a masterpiece of art.
digitized dingats come in the form of complete script, although some can be created by entering alphanumeric codes. The standardized code known as Unicode can be used to display a large number of commonly used symbols, from the degree of mark to measure temperature to Euro, a symbol used in discussing European money. Many companies that produce computer fonts also produce several Dingbat fonts for typographers.
