What are black pearls?

Pearl is a hard "stone" created inside certain types of oysters as a protection against gravel that entered their shells. Black pearls are not really black, but very dark gray, with undertones such as blue, green or purple. For centuries black pearls have been valued for their rarity; Most pearls are white, creamy or very pale shade like pink. White pearls can be colored to look like natural black pearls, immersion in a solution of silver nitrate. Experts can easily distinguish a fake black pearl from the real thing. Black pearls can be very different in the dark colors, shade and iris. Iridescence is this quality that allows stone to show different colors when they hit the different angles.

Pearl cultivation is a practice of older than one hundred years. The "growth" of pearls, rather than harvest oysters and are looking for naturally occurring pearls, is introduced into the oyster shell. During two or three years, the oysters secrete the coating over the gravel to prevent irritationsoft oyster meat. The coating is the same shade as Nacre or the mother Pearl lining of the natural shell oyster. One kind of oyster from the Polynesian Islands, Pinctada Margaritifera or Giant Oysters black, will produce pearls of dark colors or "black" pearls when they cultivate.

black pearls are very popular in modern jewelry production. Either they coincide in color and iris, or black pearls of different undertones and the shades are strung together. Sets representing perfectly corresponding pearls are much more expensive because of the difficulties in finding stones that are indistinguishable from the second.
