What are colonial candles?

In the American colonial period, candles were more than just decorations - they were a necessity. Made mainly from beef fat molten in boiling water, then deteriorated again around the candle and protruding wick, the colonial candles were the only light source as soon as the sun dropped. This was particularly critical in winter, with reduced daylight, and so autumn has become a traditional time for candles supplies that will last through a cold, dark section of the year. The arrival of molds of iron or tin mainland was a clear improvement, allowing the molten wax to solidify itself and eliminate the step in the process. The problem with the tallow candles was the fragrance they gave, along with the smoke, which over time stained the walls. In Europe, it provided light without unpleasant side effects, but came with their own own-cane, which kept them outside homes all the most heels in colonies and limited their use mainly to religious ceremonies. The grayish green berries of the Bayberry smell sweet, they were noblenot and relatively cheap. The problem in their case was the difficulty of transforming the berries into wax.

until the end of the 17th century, the practical new candle material was developed from an unlikely source, crystallized whale -sperm whale oil. He called spermacets, was odorless, burned brighter than tallow candles, and was less likely to melt in the summer heat. Soon it became a candle of the election. So evenly these colonial candles burned that they were sometimes used to tell the time to reduce the candle compared to marches on candles.

Today's candles are made of beeswax or paraffin, although soy candles become trends. Unlike colonial candles, they also come in almost endless diversity of scents. Antique shops that advertise "colonial candles" are generally referred to the candle equipment - candles holders, candles and some accessories used to display candles.
