What are colonial style houses?

colonial style houses are houses that were built during the colonial period in the United States in which all English, French, Germans and Spanish had colonies scattered in various parts of North America. The term "colonial style house" can also apply to colonial revival, modern houses to evoke colonial style. This style of architecture remains permanently popular in North America, and numerous examples can be seen throughout the United States, especially across the east coast in regions such as New York and Vermont. Local building materials usually had an impact on the type of architecture used, as well as the origin of builders, many of which built houses in styles that were known and comfortable, not always practical for the climate in which they were built. Other examples of colonial -influenced English -influenced English include New England Colonial Colonies, Cape Cod Colonials, Georgian roundnial and federal houses. Examples of Dutch, German and Spanish houses of colonial style can also be seen, and Dutch and German houses are primarily seen around the state of New York, while French colonial houses are located in the American South and Spanish style houses in the southwest and parts of California.

Several features are common for almost all colonial houses. They tend to be symmetrical and often are square or rectangular. The windows are commonly closed and the houses can be two warehouses or one attic songs. France -style houses can have porch or balconies.
