One of the trees most often grown from rootstocks is an apple tree. This is because many apple trees are susceptible to illness, so the spread of rootstocks is one of the most viable methods for hobby gardeners and orchards. Apple Tree Rootstock has been used since the beginning of the 20th century with a small change.

In addition to creating a harder plant, the use of fruit tree rootstocks ensures that growers know exactly how high their plant will be. The labels are marked with a number, which indicates the size of the mature plant. The number one label is 10 to 20 percent of the full size tree, while the number two indicates the tree 20 to 30 percent of the full size tree. The numbering number for the rootstock closes the number 10, which is a tree fullsize.

There are two basic grafting methods on the rootstock. In the first method, Scion or buds are tied together. Buds and rootstocks grow together to a brand new tree. This method of growth is called novice or grafting buds.

The second most common method includes the location of the base on the established branch before it connects them together. This grafting method is called "whip and tongue grafting". It is used when there is a viable part of a tree that is still available for growth.

Busing or grafting has several other advantages. Growers can create trees for all soil, water and light requirements. On a small honor scale, the number of trees needed to create an ideal hybrid is unbearable, but commercial growers have the necessary devices to pull it out. Trees grafted from rootstocks are less sensitive to certain types of bacteria, mushrooms and pests depending onstrengths and weaknesses of individual rootstocks and feeling.

It is also possible for gardeners to use rootstocks to replenish plants that have been damaged by fire, lightening or drought. If the roots of the plants are still alive and healthy, a similar plant or living piece of the same plant can be grafted on its own root system of a plant or tree. This process is called the "own root" grafting.
