What are Talavera tiles?

Talavera tiles are decoratively patterned, hand -painted Spanish and Mexican clay tiles. Talavera tiles come from the Spanish city of Talavera de la Reina. Talavera de la Reina was home to many potters and complex graphic patterns of tiles come from Arabian Angel's influence in Spain of the ninth century. The Spanish potters moved to Puebly, Mexico in the 16th century, and Talavera de la Reina the tile style became well known in Pueble. Puebla is still home to traditional pottery workshops that produce traditional Talavera tiles. Traditional colors used in Talavera tiles are primary colors of red, yellow, green and blue, while blue is usually quite dark.
