What are the different types of camellias?

Rod Camellia includes more than 2,300 different cultivars with a seemingly endless range of colors and shapes of flowers. They are Broadleaf Evergreen flowering shrubs original from Asia. Different types are grown for their large flowers and climate and cold tolerance. The type of tea plants, Camellia sinensis , where many green, black and oolong teas come from, is a member of this family and can be grown for harvest or as an ornamental plant.

Every year, the American company Camellia Society registers new cultivated varieties, called cultivars and add new types of Kamél to an extensive list. Many cultivars come from several types. The cultivated varieties come from individual species that are kept for the desired feature, usually the color or appearance of flowers. Hybrid cultivars are a combination of two different types of camellias that are kept together.

Camellia japonica or Japanese camellia is common species in this family that has a large flowerNY with more petals, create large, fluffy flowers. Camellia Sasanqua or Christmas camellia, has smaller flowers with simple petals that lack the flouin look of Japanese camellia, but replace it with a delicacy. Like Christmas camellia, but with smaller leaves is a common type Camellia Oleifera or Camells of tea oil.

Most camelia types are best suited for slight climates, although some winter frosts can tolerate when stopped in protected areas. In the cold climate, camens can be grown in large pots and brought inside for winter. The flowers bloom at the end of winter and early spring and disappear before the arrival of the heat of summer.

For cold climate gardeners, hippopitices have developed types of camellias that flowers in autumn, rather than in winter, can survive in colder climates. These cold climate cultivars include cam hybridsEllia Oleifera . This type of camello is cold, but does not represent large flowers sought after by gardeners. To create a high cold plant with large striking flowers, Camellia Oleifera was crossed with Camellia Sasanqua .

Camenia grows well in protected areas of garden or landscape, where plants are protected from direct sunlight and wind. A place that has a soil with good drainage and high organic matter helps to maintain healthy camenia and bloom abundantly. These plants benefit from permanently moist soil and a layer of mulch extends 2 to 4 inches (about 5 to 10 cm) deep around the base of each plant, helps maintain soil humidity and regulates the soil temperature.
