What is bitterling?

Bitterling is a type of fish that belongs to the Cyprus family. Can be identified according to the scientific name of Rhodeus. This colder fish comes from Europe streams, although it has been introduced to North America since then. Bitterlings includes more than a dozen different species, Rhodeus Amarus or European bitter.

Bitterlings are silvery purple colors with a hardly blue stripe running horizontally down the body. During the reproduction period, usually from April to June, a man develops brighter colors. At this point, it shows a reddish shade on its fin and abdomen. Bitterlings diameter between two and three inches (5 and 7.5 cm) in length. A woman of the species extends a small tube called ovipositor, from her body to lay eggs. This allows it to lay eggs in the Freshwater Mussel subordinate fibers, which will act as a host for fish eggs. The male then releases its sperm just before the shell. When the shells inhale water, the eggs are fertilized and developed and hatched inside the host gills.

Some believe that bitterlings may be able to predict pregnancy. When introducing urine of pregnant women, women of this kind developed their ovipositors. However, this study has been refuted and many people believe that fish respond similarly to urine from women who were not pregnant to urine from men.

This fish is often maintained in aquariums or decorative ponds. It prefers a temperature somewhere between 55 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit (13 and 22 degrees Celcius). The best water chemistry for this type of fish is slightly alkaline. Ideal is an area with lots of open space for swimming and plenty of vegetation. While The Bitterling can survive in outdoor ponds, it should not be left outside in the winter season where the water freezes.

These are all -powerful fish and as such consume a wide range of foods. Standard flakes or pellets should be complemented by other items. This fish will eat most of the little onesInvertebrates and prefers live food. Algae and other vegetation can also be provided for supplementary nutrition.
