They have a yellow-white belt on their backs that travel over their bodies, light yellow belly and are covered with black, control signs. Their scales are shy, which means that these snakes are rougher to the touch and more colored than snakes with smooth glossy scales.
The garter snake does not have any specified period of activity. In colder areas, this snake is usually more active during the day. On the contrary, in warmer areas will be more often night. Thamnophis Marcianus Marcianus or Marcy's Cheatred Gorter Snakes, are primary subspecies found in the United States and Northern Mexico. This species is often sold as a pet and shows an albino color form.
Although garter snakes are generally common and this type of garter is a popular pet in Kansas, a chess garter snake is considered an endangered species. It is listed as protected by the Kansas Nongame law and endangered species. The soil areas in southern Kansas have been set aside to maintain their habitat.
