What is Consigliere?

The word consigliere comes from an Italian advisor, most great for the boss of organized crime. In the film series Godfather Mario Puzo is the character of Robert Duvall Tom Hagen conservatively for the fictional family Corleone Crime Family. Although Hagen is a practicing lawyer, the role is not limited to legal counseling or protection. This person is also the third in the command of the whole Mafia family and has the executive power to decide on the spot. Only underboss, usually blood with respect to the boss, has more authority in the family of organized crime. Only the most trusted and famous nobles could become Kondigliere and can serve several generations of the ruling family. The person could be replaced when the political winds moved, but the monarchs tend to maintain only one in and time to prevent possible betrayal.

In the modern sense of the word, a number of political or social advisors MOClass families could get the designation Consigliere. It is often suggested that Bush's family, which include two presidents and governor, have Configliere, a veteran Republican politician named James Baker. Baker held a number of political positions under both presidents named Bush and in 2006 Baker led the commission to evaluate the war in Iraq. Other politicians and prominent public personalities also depend on Consigliere, even if they can be reluctant to call their advisors on this name. Political candidates often employ a person who leads them through the campaign process. Some politicians are looking for counselors from the opposite party to find out how their proposals would accept disapproving voters.

Agents and directors may have their own agendas, so it is not uncommon for entertainers to seek out the opinions of a trusted advisor before signing any obligations or contracts.

However, as Tom Hagen discovers in the Godfather series, Consigliere's career in an organized crime may suddenly end. When Michael Corleone, son of chief Vito Corleone, takes control of the family, Hagen immediately releases.
