What is fez?

Fez is a traditional hat worn in many Middle East countries. He first became popular at the beginning of the 19th century in the Ottoman Empire. The fez is shaped as the lower half of the cone, without a cylinder and flat at the top and often has tassels. Fez is traditionally red, although there are other colors. In South Asia, Fez became a symbol of Muslim identity and solidarity, while in the West he became an orientalist symbol of language.

At the beginning of the 19th century, men in the Royal Court of the Ottoman Empire, soon followed people in other areas of life, began to accept westernized fashion. Western hats, however, were not practical, because Muslim men continued during prayer, lowering the foreheads to the ground and getting the edge in the way. As a result, Fez was developed.

Fez is named around the city in Morocco, where it was created, and early versions included a turban. The hats were originally red, white or black, although in most contexts they became the norm. Red fez is traditionally colored with berries of the plant kiziljiek. Sultan Mahmud Khan II ordered that Fez would be part of formal clothing throughout the empire.

Many men today wear Fez in countries that were once part of the Ottoman Empire, including Egypt, Morocco and Bosnia. Fez is not as popular in Turkey as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey, forbade the head of wear as a symbol of feudalism. In South Asia, Muslims accepted Fez as a symbol of solidarity with their religious brothers in other areas of the world. Fez has a long history of use in military and paramilitary uniforms, often for indigenous units in European colonies, but also for national forces in Turkey, Pakistan and Italy.

Fashion European gentlemen from the 19th century often worn Fez at home relaxation, so the hat became associated with luxury and lazy, like other modes and objets d'art from the east. Shriners, members of the fraternal organization known asThe ancient Arab order of the nobles of the mystical shrine, founded in the 70s in New York, are known for the wear of the fezzo.
