What is Gandrung?

Gandrung is a ritual dance that initially originated to express the devotion of the goddess of fertility and rice, Dewi sri, in Indonesia. Beautiful, classic dance, over time has evolved to become a kind of courtship that depicts a girl looking for a man. In Javanese, the word gandrung means desperately in love or is crazy. I was thinking about from Banyuwangi in East Java, dance is also popular in Lombok and Bali, where it is performed at social events, weddings or involved tourists.

While there are a number of dancers on stage, it focuses on the only dancer who is either a jerne girl or a boy who dresses. Sometimes transvestites also play as the main dancers, and there could also be more than one main dancer on the stage. Usually Gandrung is around 9:00. with dancers performing all night. Dance ends before dawn is at the same level as other dances as Tayub, Ketuk Tilu and Lengger, which come from different parts of Java.

The main dancer is exotic dressed in traditional costume, decorative head, scarves and a beautiful fan. The dancer uses this fan or scarves temptingly during the dance to indicate the interest in a member of the audience. Can either click a person with a fan point if it is close or throw a shawl per person. The invited person usually dances together with the dancer.

Invited member of the audience can give the dancer a little money to prove recognition. It was considered to be a welcome dancing of Banyuwangi, and the city itself acquired the city of Gandrung. Her natives are inhabitants and it is believed that dancing expresses his personality. The dance form depicts influences from Madura, Java and Bali. Music has a Balinese taste, while dance movements may seem Javanese or Maduresa from time to time.

Over the years, Gandrung lost a ritual connection with the goddess Dewi Sri and is now sometimes performed as a courtship outdoors in certain parts of Lomboku. Originally, usedMachines that musicians used violins, gongs, drums and kenong. Over time, they added others like Bonang, Gamelan, Xylophones and Terbang.

musicians can also use other tools such as Angklung, Saron and Gendangs. Sometimes the singer can also lend his voice to the dance of Gandrung. Exotic music is quite alive and varies depending on the area where dance is performed.
