What is Lancetfish?
Lancetfish is a family of two types of fish known as Lonnose and Shortose Lancetfish. Both species are predators and can grow to a length of more than 6 feet (2 meters). Although Lancetfishes are relatively common in the oceans around the world, it is surprisingly little known about fish or its reproductive habits. The distinctive feature of the fish is a high and raised dorsal fin, which is much larger than the body of the fish. Both species also have a number of sharp teeth that are used to catch prey. It consists of approximately 40 different beams and is often about double the size of the body. Both Lancetfish have a slim body, which is assumed to help him remain hidden from prey and predators. In addition, there is a Little to distinguish between them. Although there are only two types of Lancetfish, which are currently recognized, there may be even more that must be discovered. Lonnose Lancetfish was first discovered in 1833, while Shortose was recognized relatively recently in 1960.
Both types of Lancetfish are predators and feed on other marine creatures. This can be seen not only from a large number of teeth, but also from large mouths. It is assumed that Lancetfish attacks and catches prey by surprises rather than forces because of the muscles are not suitable for long distances or especially fast swimming. This is backed up by a slim body, which makes it easier to hide the fish.
Although both species are predators, they are also prey for many other fish. For example, it is known that sharks and tuna prey fish. It is assumed that some types of seals are also also alatencetfish. It was found that Lancetfishes eat mainly octopus and other fish along with some crustaceans.
Despite the fact that the muscle of the fish is edible, there is no large commercial market for its meat. This is largely due to the fact that the muscle is aqueous and therefore not tasty. Lancetfishes are regularly caught to be fishermen, but almost always by chance whenThey are trapped in networks designed for other types.
