What is the machete?

The machete is a large blade designed for cutting. Generally speaking, it is usually between one and two feet (30.48 to 60.96 cm) long and tenth of a thick thumb (2.54 mm). Its primary use is to provide a cutting method for agricultural products, such as breaking open coconuts or lowering sugar cane. In the course of history, the use of military machetes has become a primary symbol of many groups. For example, the machetes were used by Cuban guerrillas thatThey prevented Havana against the UK in the Battle of 1762. The popular Army of Boricu, the Puerto Rican Marxist group, uses the machete as a symbol of liberation, leading to the nickname Macheteros . The knife machetes also became the primary symbol of militia Interhamwe Rwandan Genocide.

There are a number of different patterns for machetes around the world. Most of them are based on the same general principle, but differ in size and shape. The main African design, known as Tapanga , is about one and a half feet (45.72 cm) long with the wide back. Southeast Asia and the Pacific islands use the type of machete knife known as alem , which has a larger tip than the base.

There are also a number of links to previous design from ancient Greece known as kopis . It is assumed that the term is derived from the instrument used by the Spanish army during the 18th century known as fascine . The soldiers who used the tools called them on behalf of squeeze .
