What is a masked duck?

Masked duck, nomonyx Dominicus , is a diving duck and the smallest member of the family of ducks stiff duck. Masked ducks range from 12 to 4 inches (30-36 cm) in length and have an average span of about 20 inches (51 cm). Adult men have bodies that have a red chestnut color, along with spotted wings and a great blue account. The man clearly has a mask of black feathers that covers his faces and crown and gives the bird his name. The masked duck has a gray brown color and has two dark stripes that take place horizontally through its beige face, which also a masked appearance. This type of duck is inhabited by the Caribbean and the tropical part of South America south like Northern Peru, Uruguay and Argentina. Masked ducks are also commonly seen in Mexico and Central America, and sometimes they got lost in southern Texas. These are basically sitting birds who do not migrate.

This type of duck can be found in small ponds, lakes, mangrove marshes, thick swamps and even rice fields. Observation of masked ducks are relatively rare because it is a very cautious bird and is hidden under water or in dense vegetation at the first sign of danger. Although these birds are not rare, scientists have not been able to study masked ducks thoroughly because of their secret nature.

Masked ducks are fed by diving. Mostly these ducks feed on leaves, seeds, stems and roots of aquatic plants. They will also eat water crustaceans and various types of water insects.

The reproduction period takes a long time for this kind of duck. It nest like a deep cup and sometimes covered and resembles basketball. The nests are almost always near the water and are often hidden near the coast in dense masses of vegetation.

Woman masked ducks were also visible nestsnear water in rice fields. An average of four to six beige eggs are laid. It is assumed that male masked ducks have only a minor role in the care of a young hatchery.
