What is the popcorn ceiling?

Popcorn ceiling is a textured indoor ceiling treatment used in residential houses mainly before 1979. The appearance is now considered quite dated and some of the previous popcorn ceilings contain a harmful asbestos. The popcorn ceiling is usually white and is either painted or sprayed. In fact, the consistency of popcorn ceilings is more like a chat cheese than popcorn. The mixture cannot be too cold or the new ceiling bursts, but it must also be strong enough to contain all the lumps. It is good to exercise on a large piece of cardboard or scrap plasterboard before you actually apply the treatment of popcorn to the ceiling. The central part of the ceiling is first sprayed with popcorn texture and to spread the ceiling mixture along the edges and in the corners. Although most popcorn ceilings are white, some have added gold glitter.

Small bumps, however, also tend to trap in dirt and it can make the ceilings of popcorn to be clean.The use of ceiling tiles polystyrene to cover the popcorn ceiling is one way to keep it out of sight, but removing the texture popcorn may be another option.

It is extremely important to realize that the popcorn ceiling should not be removed until it is tested to see if it contains asbestos. A small piece of ceiling should be discarded and tested by the Agency for Protection of the Environment (EPA). After the popcorn ceiling is approved by EPA for removal, walls and floors should first be protected by plastic.

Although popcorn ceilings are usually considered dated and undesirable, they have acoustic properties that help to dampen sounds and echoes. For this reason, the popcorn ceilings were once very popular in the flats. The head of the popcorn ceiling occurred at the end of the 70s. It was found that many of these textured treatments contain asbestos.
