What is Pronghorn?
Pronghorn are medium -sized mammals from North America's plains. Their common name concerns their distinctive antlers. Although they are sometimes called pronthorn antelope, this species is not related to real antelope. These animals are located, where the conditions allow, from the southern plains of Canada to the south through the rocks and the large US plains to the northern Mexico. It is one of the fastest animals in the world.
Although Pronghorn has previously been classified as an antelope, scientists now consider them a unique species that is closely related to any other. They are classified as Antilocapra American , the only member of the Antilocapridae family . There are five recognized subspecies of Pronghorn, two of whom, sonoran and peninsula Prontghorn are considered endangered.
Pronghorn has relatively long legs and ears, with a strong similarity to deer and many species of African antelopes. Adults stand from 30 to 40 inches (about 75 to 100 cm) on the shoulder and weigh about £ 75 to £ 150 (about 34 to68 kg.) Males are larger than women. The males have a black spot on the side of the face. The large white patch under the tail has long hairs that are taken when the tail is elevated, used as a visual alarm to alert another pronghorn to potential danger.
antlers or corners of this kind are the most accurately called corner coats. They are unique for this species and have the properties of both right corners and real antlers. Both sexes have corner shells, but only males have a back type that gives the species its name. The longest corner shells are about 15 inches (about 40 cm).
Although they live on pastures or prairies, animals usually eat sage and other bushes. They also eat a range of leaf low -growing plants. Pronghorn sometimes eats grass and has been observed to eat cactus. If their food supply is sufficiently moist, they do not have to drink water regularly.
period of reproduction is in autumn, withby birth in the middle of the following year. After their first reproduction season, women usually give birth to two collies. Children can stand within a few hours after birth and can run only at age. Although they start eating grass at the age of about three weeks, swimmers usually stay with their mother for 12 to 18 months.
