What is Rex Begonia?

Gardeners increase begonia rex-cultrome hybrids-well called Rex Begonias-to their distinctive, strongly textured leaves. People often call them a king or painted leaf begons because of very decorative leaves. Some cultivars have uniquely spirally leaves, but many of them have heart -shaped leaves. They are usually medium to large plants, although some hybrids or cultivars are dwarf versions. No matter what size is, these plants often delight their owners with their color leaves. Growers have crossed different species of Begonia so much that simple classifications are extremely difficult. Officially, Rex Begonias belongs to the Begonia Family Family. In this family there are 1,300 to 2,000 species, which increases confusing classification. Many Rex Cultivars thrive under fluorescent lamps, for example in an office environment. Are more colorful and energetic if 6 to 10 inches (about 15 to 25 cm) below the bulb, and the heat from the light can help the plant produceColors that are more brilliant. When planted in the garden, they appreciate the filtered light, but often burn in direct sunlight. If they are planted outdoors in a slight or colder climate, growers usually dig a root system and store the plant inside for winter.

Growers choose these plants for their kaleidoscope of colors, including various green, silver or gray and chestnuts to black chestnuts. One of the more popular hybrids is known as Merry Christmas, Rhurthal or Rahrtal, which usually has a distinctive band formula of chestnut -red fading on pink silver and green. These colors radiate out of the base of the leaf.

There are a number of leaf shapes for gardeners. Helen Lewis is a cult of Rex Begonia, which has very dark chestnut leaves colored wine, which are marked with a band of silver, which mimics the outline of the edge of the leaves. The underside of the leaf is bright red, as well as the veins of the leaf. Escargot has spiral leaves that have a wide group of silver and highlight the upper part of the green leaf and sports the red underside. Helen Teupel has a slightly heart -shaped leaf that has very aimed, jagged edges.

Rex Begonias can grow quite large and can produce leaves that are more than 12 inches (30.5 cm) long and more than 6 inches (15 cm) wide. Emerald Giant has leaves that can measure up to 18 inches (about 45 cm) long. Other begonias may have smaller leaves such as Duartei, with leaves that are less than 7 inches (18 cm). Mini Merry lives by its name because its long 3 inches (8 cm) leaves a much more merry Christmas "Begonia coloring.

Begonia flowers usually have female and male flowers. In general, Rex Begonia flowers are not striking as tuber flowers Begonia. It often measures 0.5 to 1 inch (1.5 to 2.5 cm) across. Most flowers are pink even if they can be white or orange pink, in za lot of cultivar or hybrid. Many growers choose flowers to keep the leaves in their main.
