What is Shumard oak?
SHUMARD, quercus shumardii is a large tree in the Beech family originating from the southeastern United States. These trees have a long service life, grow rapidly and benefit many different climates and soil conditions, making them popular trees for use in efforts for field and afforestation. Shumard oak is also known as Shumard Red Oak, Schneck Oak, spotted oak and Swamp Red Oak. In maturity, the case diameter is usually 24-39 inches (60-100 cm). The crown where the leaf upper branches are usually 39-59 feet (12-18 m) across.
Shumard Oak leaves remain green long in autumn before brown and red. The trees shed their leaves annually and in spring new ones. After reaching maturity at the age of about 25, Shumard Oaks produces an annual crop of acorns.
ACORNS are relatively large, up to 1 inch (3 cm) and are an important source of food for birds, wild turkey, squirrels and deer. Although they have a bitter taste, the acorns can eat people after they are tanninsextinguished. They can be ground on flour, baked and eaten whole.
These trees tolerate different weather conditions, but benefit in areas with moist soil rich in nutrients. Shumard Oaks, a native of the milder climate of the southern US, is not doing well in regions with long cold winters. The trees have weak roots and do not tolerate flooding. Shumard Oaks, because of their sensitive roots, could die if they were transplanted and should be placed in their permanent home while still seeds. Mature samples, however, can survive slight damage to the fire because the trees are native of areas that are maintained by periodic fires.
Shumard Oak is susceptible to many diseases that affect other red oak species. Oak Wilt is particularly concerned about these types of trees. There are also worries of molds, lace roots and cancer diseases.
Shumard Oak has a number of commercial uses. In a krAyinarians are often used for shadow trees. They produce strong, heavy, coarse -grained wood, so Shumard Duby is awarded for their lumber. They are often used in the floor, lining, cabinet and furniture.
