What is a suit?
ZOOT SUIT is a charming style of clothing that has become popular in the 30th and 40 years. At that time it was associated with certain minority groups in the United States such as chicanos and African -Americans. This style of the suit was also connected in popular culture with youth gangs and jazz music. Today, most people think of jazz and rocking culture when they think of zoot suits.
ZOOT suit is an excessive suit, with wide -flowed pants collected by ankles, or a trap , and a long jacket with huge shoulder pads called Carlango . The excess of the fabric necessary to become the style of a sign of pomp. This clothing is usually worn for formal occasions and is often complemented by a long chain of watches on pants, pointed shoes and a large felt hat with feathers. The name may come from the Mexican-American slang pronunciation of the "suit". There were also female versions of the suit, althoughToday they are rarely visible, some with skirts on the knee instead of a tram.
Wearing zoot suits became openly defiantly after the style was formally banned in 1942 by the federal war production board, which considered suits by wasting fabric. In 1943, the so-called riots Zoot exploded in Los Angeles, where the style was very popular among Mexican-American young people. Soldiers and sailors began to beat anyone who found this type of suit in Eastern Los Angeles, in the heart of the Latin community, although there were also African -Americans and Philippine Americans. Military men also destroyed as many suits as they could, ripped them out of the bearers and burned clothes in the streets.
Though Zoot Suiters suffered the most violence in riots, and hundreds of arrests were also created. Only nine sailors were arrested, all of whom were released without punishment. The United States Army responded by the fact that governmentsl Los Angeles outside the limits of military personnel.
In a sense, ZOOT will not be able to suit the popularity of fashion as a symbol of cultural pride and position against racism. The first game Chicano on Broadway was the musical Luiz Valdez, Zoot Suit (1979), made in the film in 1981.
