What is alt-country music?

Alt-country music is a nickname for a genre known as an alternative country. Alt-country music has roots in the style of country music artists such as Johnny Cash and Hank Williams, but is also based on movement and punk music and has a rough edge, unlike the overproduced sound of Nashville stars like Garth Brooks or Shania Twain. Alt-country music is sometimes also referred to as American Music, or as no depression , after the name of the albums of the Early Altry band Uncle Tupelo. Since then, artists like Neil Young and Steve Earle have successfully combined rock and country music. The musical form, however, did not acquire the official name until the release of the album Uncle Tupelo no depression , which included folk envelopes and punk/folk origin tunes. The group recorded four albums before division. Today, both Uncle's singers perform in their own successful bands: Jay Farrar in Son Volt and Jeff Tweeda in Wilco.

Other successful Alt-Country groups include North Carolina Band Whiskeytown and her main singer Ryan Adams, who has since created a successful career as a solo artist; and Old 97s, an energy band from Texas that combines country Twang with rock music.
