What is amaryllis?

Amaryllis is an ornamental perennial that produces large bell -shaped flowers. Named from the Greek amrasso to mean "spark". It is also a monotypical genus, which means that it contains a single species - in this case amaryllis belladonna . However, it should not be confused with a hippeasstru, a popular flowering plant sold during the winter holiday period that belongs to the same family. In a less mild climate, however, Amyllis can be grown as a flower pot, inside or out. In fact, because its bulb is one of the simplest flowers, it is often grown inside in a colder climate.

This plant is valued for its stunning flowers. While most move in color from white to pink and red, hybrids are also available that offer greater variety of flower colors, as well as striped or multicolored flowers. These plants bloom prolifically, sometimes produce as much as a dozen flowers on a single stem. After 7 to 10 weeks of flowering it is possible to force a druHOD Flower of the same plant. If carefully maintained, one bulb is able to continue producing flowers for 75 years.

In the garden, amaryllis bulbs should be planted in composting soil with good drainage at the end of autumn or early in the spring. You can also store bulbs for up to six weeks in a cold dark place like a refrigerator. However, it never stores bulbs in the fridge with apples or sterilization of bulbs. Once the bulbs are planted in the ground, you can expect to bloom up to eight weeks.
