What is an academic house?

In the 19th century, the house of academic style became a popular choice of construction for homes, especially in wet or winter climate. The academic style house was prominent in naval Canadian areas and mixed the West Indian influences with Canadian practicality. The houses were often distributed in Georgian style - that is, the rooms were arranged on both sides of the central corridor with the kitchen in the back of the house and chimneys on the far walls of both sides of the house.

The academic house has a steep, sloping roof with shields that effectively shed snow and moisture. The house was usually one or one and a half stories tall and the attic of the attic created by a steep roof was used as a sleeping area. The space can also be used as an attic storage space. The academic style house was often made of native forests that were not easily influenced by insects or moisture; Cypress was a popular choice to southeast United States. The academic style house is further built either on blocks or sometimes on stilts to cHe played in front of floods, rot due to ground moisture and insects.

The academic style house experienced a revival in the American southeast and became a prominent architectural style in states like Louisiana. In the age of 70, these houses began to grow again, this time with the influence of creatures. Academic influence in this area was already prominent because academic settlers lived in the area for a century or more. The structures had to be adapted to the climate of the Gulf of Mexico, eventually the houses were raised from the ground to prevent floods.

Instead of using the stone for the construction of houses, as was the case in Acadia, those who settled in Louisiana used clay, and Spanish moss mixed together to build the walls. This material was good insulation and was easily accessible. On the outside of the house, the mixture was covered with horizontal boards of cypresses to be protected from rain. The trace of these houses wasAnd most often almost square and steep roof would extend through the porch to the front and/or back of the house to create an outdoor living space.

While the Canadian version of academic houses had basements for storage, in Louisiana and the deep south it was not possible due to the high water level. Therefore, above -ground cellars were built to the house. The first houses were very small, most often only one room; But over time, houses with more rooms began to appear, leaving the door leading to the central corridor.
