What is a niche?

The niche is an architectural term concerning the recessed space in the room. The word is derived from Spanish, alcova , which stems from Arabic, al quobba . The niche can be any type of separate or detached area that is associated with the main area. The niches are commonly observed in sleeping and eating areas inside. They can also be used to display a work of art or fountain inside or out.

Garden niches are often part of the English style garden. These can be separate small buildings like a gazebo or separated small areas outside the main garden.
