What is Eastern white pine?
East white pine is a large pine, which comes from the eastern part of North America. It can be called white pine or northern white pine, as well as many other names such as Cork Pine, pumpkin pine and yellow pine or scientifically pinus strobus. The average height of this tree is 50 - 80 feet (15 - 24 m) and can live on average 200 years or up to 450 years. Eastern white pine can have their lower trunks without branches, while higher branches are extending up. In the United States, eastern white pine from northern Georgia is growing to Minnesota and in Canada the tree is located from the southeast Manitoba to Newfoundland.
Maine is nicknamed in the state of pine and in 1945 made the eastern white pine tree with its official tree. The tree also became the state tree of Michigan in 1955. The Canadian province of Ontario called Eastern White Pine its official tree in 1984. Eastern white pine are known for growing and straight and they used to use the British Royal Navyo to produce masts for sailboats.
Today, eastern white pine are the main source of soft wood lumber for the construction. The wood has even grains and the attractive color of the light. The cones are long, narrow and reddish -brown. The trees bloom in May and floral clusters can be yellow, pink, purple or light green red.
