What is an oriental lily?

Oriental lily is a class of large decorative perennials that produce strongly fragrant flowers, and one of the most famous cultivars of this plant is the star lily. Other varieties include Casablanca, Tom Puce, Black Beauty, Mona Lisa, Yellow Ribbons and End of Journey. Oriental lilies can grow to extremely high, with a range between 18 inches (45 cm) and 6 feet (1.8 m). Its flowers are usually pink, red or white. These decorative plants produce very large flowers. Most varieties bloom in July, August or September. Asian lilies tend to grow shorter and produce smaller flowers and most of the species of Asian lilies are not fragrant. The cultivars of Asian lilies include Centerfold, Lollypop, Enchantment, Landini, Korsica and Dawn Star. It is possible to mix Asian and oriental liliiodrds in one garden, allowing these two species to flow at different intervals if there is sufficient space to spread the roots between the stems.

Oriental lilies may not survive in wind conditions and may require betting to be successful because this species grows so high. This type of flowering bulb prefers several hours of direct sunlight, but the roots should be protected if possible to keep them in the hottest weather. Use mulch materials to cover the base of the plant such as compost, chips or leaves. In areas with a cold weather condition, strong mulching in autumn will help protect oriental lily from frost damage.

For the best results during the growing season, the root system of the Oriental lily should be maintained slightly wet, but do not forget to maintain good drainage. These plants will prosper on the western face of the house if there is a means of draining. Avoid soaking the petals when watering, which may cause wilting or funging in warmer weather. Instead, try to water only the base of the plant.

In general, lilies are hardy perennials that are returned every year with minimal maintenance. Blooms should be detained by careful removal one by one. This process prevents lily from waste of energy in seed production. Dead leaves can be limited every year in autumn or spring.

Gardeners should be warned that some varieties of lily are toxic to felines. Efforts can be made to prevent neighborly cats from accessing lilium plants. Individuals with internal cats should note that the ingestion of any part of some lilies, especially Easter lilies, can cause kidney failure.
