What is Bismarckia?

Bismarckia Nobilis, also known as Bismarcck Palm, is a large tropical palm in the Arecaceae family. It is valued for its visual attraction, sports wide, bluish leaves. Although the tree was native from Africa, it was introduced into tropical areas in North America. Under certain conditions, smaller Bismarck palms can be kept inside, although the tree generally requires a lot of growing space. Bismarckia grows best in hot climate and relatively dry soil, yet it is known for its hardness in various conditions of the environment.

Although Madagascar, a large island off the southeast coast of Africa, Bismarck Palms was also found in Surinam. These palms are not originally from North America, but were introduced to various parts of Florida, where they seem to be doing well. Wherever the tree is grown, Bismarckia requires a large amount of space due to its huge size, the only exception is when it is kept as a small palm in the covered container.

Bismarck Palms belongs to the Action familyae. Other trees in this family include coconut palms, royal palms and palms of ivory nuts. Bismarck Palm, however, is the only species belonging to the genus Bismarckia.

reaching up to 60 feet (about 18 meters) high and 20 feet (about 6 meters) or wider, Bismarck Palm is valuable for its massive presence. Light bluish gray, palm leaves grow up to 10 feet (about 3 meters) across and feel wax. Such leaves are classified as a Broadleaf evergreen and show no color change during the autumn season. Bismarckia grows with a single trunk, a wide diameter that contributes to a remarkably symmetrical appearance of the palm. Small, round, brown fruit are made by a tree that tends to attract animals or pests.

Another reason the palm is popular is caused by its hardiness in various climates. Grows best in zone 10 and zone 11 climate where the lowest probable temperature in winterIt is approximately 40 degrees Fahrenheit (about 4.5 degrees Celsius). However, bismarck palms can be maintained in zone 9, at which temperatures can reach up to 20 degrees Fahrenheit (about -6.7 degrees Celsius) during winter --strom is able to withstand mild frosts. Overall, Bismarckia has a relatively slow level of growth, although the warmer the climate, the faster the palm will grow.

Bismarck Palms generally prefer full sunlight and are highly resistant to drought. They are customized to different types of soil and are relatively resistant to salt, although they are best in a slightly acidic, well -drained soil. These trees also require low maintenance, because pruning is rarely necessary.
